Maximising style in small living spaces

Maximising style in small living spaces

Our talented stylist Sophie brings you expert advice on creating style in your own home. She styled a cosy studio apartment that we designed as an example of how to utilise every space to the max!

“If you already live in the space the first step is to declutter and prioritise. Get rid of any unnecessary items. This will help you create more space and make it easier to organise your belongings. Make the most of every inch of space by optimising storage. Install shelves and cabinets on walls, use under-bed storage, and invest in organisers for your wardrobe and chest of drawers. This will help you keep your belongings organised and prevent clutter from taking over.”

Six SIMPLE steps to creating a stylish and coherent home.

COLOUR SCHEME

Choosing a colour scheme is key! A consistent colour scheme throughout your small apartment can help create a cohesive and stylish look. Stick to 2-3 colours that complement each other, and use them throughout the apartment in everything from wall colour to furniture and artwork. In a small space a neutral base colour will help keep the space light and airy, however this doesn’t mean you have to paint all the walls white. Defining certain areas with colour can work really well to zone the space.

ZONING

Create zones - Even if the space is small, such as in a studio apartment is important to define different areas for different activities. This can be achieved cleverly using paint or wallpaper to indicate a separation of areas. Rugs, furniture placement, and lighting can also help create separate zones for sleeping, dining, and relaxing on the sofa!

FURNITURE

Invest in multi-functional furniture - When you have limited space furniture pieces that can serve multiple purposes are really helpful. Items such as a sofa bed, storage bed or an ottoman with storage space can hide away clutter and still look stylish. Foldable tables and chairs can also keep living space feeling less cluttered. Being smart with the materials and design of items you choose can have a big impact on a space. Glass for example allows more light to be bounced around than a solid material would. Choosing floating bedsides or TV units will also create the illusion of there being more space in a room.

Mirrors

Mirrors can create the illusion of more space and add light to a room. Consider adding a large mirror or a gallery wall of mirrors to make your small apartment feel more open by bouncing light around, especially into darker areas.

PLANT LIFE

Adding greenery to an apartment by purchasing some plants, even in a small space can add life and colour. If there isn’t a lot of light opt for low-maintenance plants that thrive in low-light conditions, such as snake plants or pothos.

INDIVIDUALITY

Use art and accessories to add personality. Just because you have limited space doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. Add personality and interest to your small apartment with art, textiles, and other decor items that reflect your personal style.

By incorporating these tips, you can maximise style in a small apartment and create a space that feels both functional and stylish. Overall, maximising style in a small apartment requires a combination of creativity, organisation, and smart use of space. By following these tips, you can create a stylish and functional living space that feels both spacious and welcoming.
